The purpose of the article is to explore the “Ukrainian” visual body in the discourse of post-Soviet and postcolonial libertinage. The novelty is determined by the problem formulation (Ukrainian libertinage) and by the revealing of cross-cultural characteristics of the Ukrainian and Western visual body as well. The post-Soviet Ukrainian artists’ approaches to present the “Ukrainian” body as the opposite and antinomy to the Soviet body are analyzed. A “free” body principle is realized through post-Soviet and postcolonial libertinage strategies. The study of this process is based on the work of such artists as Illia Kabakov, Borys Mykhailov, Victor Sydorenko, Arsen Savadov, Oleh Kulyk. These artists worked with “Soviet” body creating multilevel channels for its interpretation: “body-victim”, “body-trauma”, “body-riot”, “body-simulacrum”, “body-grotesque”, “sensual body”. It turns out that the strategy of visual postcolonial libertinage was to demystify and “deheroize” the “Soviet” body. The emotive characteristics of body visualization are determined: the conclusion is that a depiction of the body, naked body is the way to express unprejudiced “animal” emotions allowing to “release” the “body-trauma”. The point is the “Ukrainian” body, naked body in postcolonial and post-Soviet libertinage becomes a symbol of “otherness”, freedom, creative unprejudice, experiment.

Comparison of modelling techniques for milk-production forecasting

peer-reviewedThe objective of this study was to assess the suitability of 3 different modeling techniques for the prediction of total daily herd milk yield from a herd of 140 lactating pasture-based dairy cows over varying forecast horizons. A nonlinear auto-regressive model with exogenous input, a static artificial neural network, and a multiple linear regression model were developed using 3 yr of historical milk-production data. The models predicted the total daily herd milk yield over a full season using a 305-d forecast horizon and 50-, 30-, and 10-d moving piecewise horizons to test the accuracy of the models over long- and short-term periods. All 3 models predicted the daily production levels for a full lactation of 305 d with a percentage root mean square error (RMSE) of ≤12.03%. However, the nonlinear auto-regressive model with exogenous input was capable of increasing its prediction accuracy as the horizon was shortened from 305 to 50, 30, and 10 d [RMSE (%) = 8.59, 8.1, 6.77, 5.84], whereas the static artificial neural network [RMSE (%) = 12.03, 12.15, 11.74, 10.7] and the multiple linear regression model [RMSE (%) = 10.62, 10.68, 10.62, 10.54] were not able to reduce their forecast error over the same horizons to the same extent. For this particular application the nonlinear auto-regressive model with exogenous input can be presented as a more accurate alternative to conventional regression modeling techniques, especially for short-term milk-yield predictions

Towards a consensus regarding global signal regression for resting state functional connectivity MRI

    Get PDF
The number of resting state functional connectivity MRI studies continues to expand at a rapid rate along with the options for data processing. Of the processing options, few have generated as much controversy as global signal regression and the subsequent observation of negative correlations (anti-correlations). This debate has motivated new processing strategies and advancement in the field, but has also generated significant confusion and contradictory guidelines. In this article, we work towards a consensus regarding global signal regression. We highlight several points of agreement including the fact that there is not a single “right” way to process resting state data that reveals the “true” nature of the brain. Although further work is needed, different processing approaches likely reveal complementary insights about the brain's functional organisation

Episodic disk accretion in the halo of the 'old' Pre-Main Sequence cluster Eta Chamaeleontis

We present multi-epoch medium-resolution observations of two M4.5 candidate members in the halo of the ~8 Myr Eta Chamaeleontis open cluster. Over six months of observations both stars exhibited variations in their H-alpha line profiles on timescales of days to months, with at least one episode of substantial activity attributable to accretion from a circumstellar disk. We derive an accretion rate ~10^-8.7 Msun/yr for this event, with a rate of ~10^-10.6 Msun/yr in quiescence. Episodic accretion like that observed here means existing surveys of accreting Weak-lined T-Tauri Stars in young clusters are likely incomplete and that gas dissipation timescales calculated from the fraction of accreting objects are underestimates.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. The objective of this study was to create a tool that will enable renewable energy microgrid (REμG) facility users to make informed decisions on the utilization of electrical power output from a building integrated REμG connected to a smart grid. A decision support tool for renewable energy microgrids (DSTREM) capable of predicting photovoltaic array and wind turbine power outputs was developed. The tool simulated users’ daily electricity consumption costs, avoided CO2 emissions and incurred monetary income relative to the usage of the building integrated REμG connected to the national electricity smart grid. DSTREM forecasted climate variables, which were used to predict REμG power output over a period of seven days. Control logic was used to prioritize supply of electricity to consumers from the renewable energy sources and the national smart grid. Across the evaluated REμG electricity supply options and during working days, electricity exported by the REμG to the national smart grid ranged from 0% to 61% of total daily generation. The results demonstrated that both monetary saving and CO2 offsets can be substantially improved through the application of DSTREM to a REμG connected to a building

Collections were made for gulf butterfish Peprilus burti along a cross-shelf transect at depths of 5-100 m in the Gulf of Mexico off Texas from October 1977 to July 1980. Butterfish mature at 100-160 mm fork length as they approach age I. Spawning occurs primarily from September through May, but length frequencies indicate it concentrates, or is most successful, in distinct Winter (late January-mid-May) and Fall (early September-late October) periods that coincide with downcoast, alongshore currents (toward Mexico). Gonad data and persistence of small fish indicate spawning in winter, but at a low level. Spawning probably occurs offshore and upcoast toward the northcentral Gulf. Surface currents of the cyclonic shelf gyre probably transport eggs/larvae inshore and downcoast to recruit to the bottom in water 5-27 m deep, used as nurseries by butterfish when they are 2-5 months old. Butterfish disperse offshore as they mature and congregate in 36-100 m depths when they are 9-12 months old. They average 130-146 mm in fork length at age I in the northwestern Gulf, but 120-124 mm at age I and about 170 mm at age II in the northcentral Gulf. Estimates for the von Bertalanffy growth parameters L-infinity, K, and t0 were 164 mm, 1.99/year, and -0.20 years, respectively, for pooled northwestern Gulf Winter cohorts and 141 mm, 2.69/year, and -0.06 years, respectively, for pooled Fall cohorts. Somatic growth ceases as spawning approaches in the northwestern Gulf, but fish from the northcentral Gulf show large annual size increments. Butterfish reach about 200 mm in fork length, the largest ones occurring in the northcentral Gulf. Apparent maximum ages are 1-1.5 years in the northwestern Gulf, and 2-2.5 years in the northcentral Gulf. Differences in population attributes suggest complete mortality at age I in the northwestern Gulf or some unknown combination of an offshore and permanent contranatant spawning or postspawning emigration of adults to the northcentral Gulf. The genus Peprilus shows zoogeographic differences in population dynamics near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina
